A lovely Late Victorian Mahogany Bracket clock by R & W Sorley in full working order and keeping good time. It has a high quality English Chain Driven Triple Fusee Movement which has been cleaned, serviced and oiled and the springs cleaned and greased. The clock Westminster chimes the quarter hours on four gongs and chimes the hours on a fifth, larger gong. The tone of the gongs is deep and mellow. The movement backplate is stamped 100.
The silvered face has a main dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary dials: chime or silent and time regulation.

The case is of solid Mahogany and has a mirror like polish. It is in excellent condition with just a couple of dinks in the flat top and some losses to the rear opening edges that are covered by the rear door. It stands on four brass feet. The side frets and rear door white metal panel are of Art Nouveau style and have new purple silk backing to match the original perished silk.
The clock is contemporary with the Art Nouveau movement at the Glasgow School of Art (c1900: Rennie Mackintosh et al.) and I believe the side frets and rear panel were added by the retailer R & W Sorley prior to sale. Evidence for this are that the side fret beading is only glued, not pinned and is stained and polished (as would be required if visible through glass windows, but not frets), and under the rear door beading is a second set of pin holes that do not match those of the beading pins, suggesting perhaps a temporary rear panel was used for shipment of the clock from London which was replaced with the current perforated white metal panel by the retailer.
R & W Sorley were one of the most influential high class jewellery, clock makers and retailers retailers in Glasgow and undertook the cleaning and regulation of all the large clocks in the city.
