Rare, early pocket map of Illinois published by Henry Tanner and dated 1830. The small map (roughly 11 3/8” x 14”) contains an inset of the steam boat routes, but more interestingly, an inset of the lead region of what was then known as the Huron District (now Wisconsin). The highly-detailed inset map lists locations of various digs (with great names like “Hardscrabble Digs”), springs, taverns, farms, and—more importantly—claims! Truly a rare glimpse into a region that was often given little geographical reference! The map also features defunct county lines and a large swath of land labeled “Bounty Lands”!

Condition report: the map was in ribbons when I received it. I carefully reassembled it with archival mending tissue (see picture of map’s reverse). Two of the corners have been clipped(?) and are missing (not affecting any printed area). The map still retains some small separations at a few fold lines, and heavy foxing and offsetting (giving it character, in my opinion). The front cover has detached but is present, and the covers are worn, scuffed, and rubbed. That said, the map is extremely rare in any condition, this one being perfectly suitable for display if framed properly! A must have for any Illinois or Great Lakes map collector!

I will be listing a handful of other early US maps, so be sure to check out my other listings!
