with Three Lithograph Plates, 1880

George Boulenger, On the Palæarctic and Æthiopian Species of Bufo. Offprint from the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, November 16, 1880, pages 545-574, with three lithograph plates.  Bound in plain blue wrap, wrap split along spine and detached from text.  Text in good condition.

Belgian-born zoologist George Boulenger (1858-1937) published descriptions of over 2000 new animal species, chiefly fish, reptiles, and amphibians, during his forty year career at the British Museum.  This attempt to systematize the taxonomy of Eurasian and African toads is one of his earliest publications, written just before his departure from Belgium to work at the British Museum.

It is inscribed by Boulenger on the front wrap, A Monsieur le Baron de Sélys-Longchamps | Hommage respectueux de l'auteur | G.A. Boulenger.  Belgian politician and entomologist Edmond de Sélys-Longchamps (1813-1900) was a prolific taxonomist and obsessive collector of dragonflies, grasshoppers and other large winged insects.
