SANTANA

SIDE A:    JINGO

SIDE B:    CAMINOS DIABOLICOS

                  (Evil Ways)

MEGARARE and HARD-TO-FIND original CBS Records very first Mono press released by CBS Records, made and distributed in Chile in 1971 by Industrias Eléctricas Y Musicales Odeon S.A. (Odeon Records), licensed from CBS, U.S.A., catalog number SCMD 11013, with hand etched matrix numbers XSM-139377/5 in Side A and XSM-139377/2 in Side B, with traditional orange/black CBS Records labels with small boxed CBS logo at top and 4-prong push-out center. Yes, Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from Chile!!!

“Jingo” was originally released by Santana in USA in 1970 and we had to wait until 1971 to see this so classic single released in Chile. These songs were included in the first LP released by Santana and they are versions of songs “Gin-Go-Lo-Ba” (in Yoruba language, pronounced “Jin-Go-Low-Bah”) (“Don’t Worry” in English) by Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji (released in 1960) and “Evil Ways” by percussionist Willie Bobo (released in 1967). Song titles are written in original language “Jingo” and in Spanish, translated to English, the song “Evil Ways”, with full credits for songwriters, play time of each song and original US catalog number. It’s interesting to notice the matrix numbers take the original US catalog number of the Side 1 of debut LP “Santana”, released in 1969, “XSM 139377” and add “/5” and “/2” in each side, those numbers show the place in that Side of the LP, “Evil Ways” is the song number 2 and “Jingo” is the song number 5. In labels that information is “band 5” and “band 2”. It’s also interesting to notice that here in Chile, just like in all versions of the period I know, the credit for songwriter is “J. Zack”, but that’s wrong. The error appeared in original LP “Santana”, so the singles of the period also replicated the error, the real songwriter is Clarence “Sonny” Henry, as credited in original release by Willie Bobo. But we got an UNIQUE ERROR in Chile too, in the original Chilean press the original US catalog number was misspelled “XMS 239377” in Side B, it’s correctly written as part of the matrix number but in label it’s misspelled. So, here you have the chance to get and own this MEGARARE CHILEAN PRESS of this classic single by Santana, with Spanish-written titles and UNIQUE ERROR, a record almost never seen and maybe now auctioned here in eBay by the very first time with the error already mentioned!!! WOW!!! A MUST TO HAVE for all fans, lovers and collectors of Santana, Willie Bobo, Babatunde Olatunji and Psych Rock, Latin Soul, Afrobeat and African Jazz music!!!

This record doesn’t have a cover. The record is in VG- or VG condition both sides, glossy and clean, with loads and loads of soft scuffs, hairlines and light and not so light scratches, one of them crossing all the wax in Side B, which amazingly don’t affect play at all, with the push-out center intact. Labels on both sides are in great EX+ or NM- condition the Side A, clean and clear, with minimal spindle hole wear and a very faint age browning, and in EX or EX+ condition the Side B, with light spindle hole wear, some factory imperfections and initials written of a past owner. The sound is the best part, it’s in strong EX+ or even NM- condition the Side A, loud, clear and clean, virtually no background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), with some minimal occasional and barely audible soft crackles here and there, more evident in the last seconds of the song, and in EX- or EX condition the Side B, with constant soft crackles and less clicks and pops that in Side A, which could cause some distraction but the sound still keeps loud and clear from the beginning to the end, with a soft hiss more evident in the first seconds of the song and constant soft crackles and a light pop at the last seconds of the song. Overall, this is a great record in this MEGARARE CHILEAN PRESS, with Spanish-written song title and UNIQUE ERROR, maybe not for strict Minty minds or audiophiles, especially for the look of the wax, but for sure this is still a great record with still a glossy look, almost immaculate labels and great sound quality after about 53 years, which shouldn't disappoint anyone and should satisfy any serious collector who knows the real level of rarity of this Chilean issue. Yes, Sirs, what a FIND!!! Click on the pictures to enlarge and see the labels and cover in detail. WOW!!!

We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

FEEDBACK

We don’t have anything to hide and we know the buyers expect to receive feedback after to pay for the items they win. Most of sellers say to give feedback when buyers leave feedback first. But we know that’s not fair for buyers. So, we leave feedback immediately after to receive the payment, because we understand that’s the part that buyers must receive feedback for. And we expect to receive positive feedback from buyers who receive the records immediately after they have got the records.
