Antique Moorcroft Macintyre Florian Teapot Stand, Burslem, England, c1900

For a stunning 1909 Art Nouveau cobalt blue chocolate pot by Albany & Harvey Potteries, Burslem, please see our other current auctions and the last 3 photos on this auction page. This auction is for the Moorcroft Macintyre teapot stand, only.
  • The printed brown mark on the bottom of this teapot stand reads, "Macintyre Burslem England, JM & Co."
  • Beside that is an impressed mark of arched letters over text; "Macintyre Co, Burslem" possibly - is unreadable.
  • This antique Moorcroft Macintyre piece is from William Moorcroft's Macintyre Florian line and dates to about c1900, per online research.
  • Information included here is from online research; we are not experts in this field. Please use your own knowledge and discretion in assessing this piece for your collection.
  • Cannot confirm the pattern name. It consists of glossy-glazed white, peach and blue forget-me-not or violet flowers atop delicate green stems that form a garland shaped into a 6-pointed star. The ground is white inside the garland and a rich, watery cobalt-blue outside.
  • The flat, outside edge has 6 panels of half-moon shaped designs referred to as fish-scales or peacock feathers - a distinctive and beautiful recurring Moorcroft design motif.
  • These are tactile, hand applied slip-trailed or tube lined designs introduced by Moorcroft with his Macintyre Florian and Dura Ware lines.
  • The glossy glazed body is an off-white earthenware pottery with 2 tactile inside-rim bands and a tapered, flat outside edge. There is a 1/2" high recessed foot on the bottom.
  • Measures about 6 1/4" in diameter and about 1" high including the foot.
  • Weighs 1 pound before packaging.
  • Makes a very nice presentation. Can be displayed on a stand as art although it was intended to be utilitarian and used as a tableware teapot stand or trivet.
  • Item is in good antique condition with the expected overall crazing showing some discoloration. There is one under-the-rim chip to note and some inside-rim roughness that is more felt than seen.
  • Any other irregularities, flea bites, glaze misses, etc. are from the production and handcrafted process.
  • Please see photos as they are part of the description.
  •  William Moorcroft (1872-1945) was highly influenced by the Art Nouveau and William Morris Arts & Crafts movements and by his botanist father, as well. In 1897, at age 27, Moorcroft began his highly successful career as an art pottery designer for Macintyre & Co potteries in Burslem, England. Within a year he became director of their art pottery division. By 1913, his popularity soon led to the establishment of his own Moorcroft studio in Burslem. Moorcroft's pieces quickly became highly collectible. In 1928, after numerous medals and well-deserved international fame, Moorcroft was appointed "Potter to H.M. The Queen." After William Moorcroft passed, his son, Walter, carried on his father's work. Today, in Burslem, England, talented artists continue the production of Moorcroft pottery, preserving and evolving the design traditions of William Moorcroft. Queen Elizabeth II is said to have enhanced her Royal Collection with many new Moorcroft designs. Source: Online research.
