Exceptional vintage 1940's photo album with photos of California by the wife of a couple traveling through the state and ending with what looks like the early stages of construction of a home for them. 377 black and white snapshot photos are included (plus three loose), neatly arranged throughout, some with written identifications: views along Angles Crest Highway and the Lava Bed Road to Bishop, with photos of Little Lake, Father Crowley's grave, Joshua trees in the desert, Owens Lake, Bishop Creek, Mammoth Lake, and the Tungsten mine in the High Sierras; several pages of photos of a parade through downtown Santa Barbara (Granada Theatre in background on one photo); the waterfront in Santa Barbara; photos of the Old Mission in Santa Barbara, along with what I think are photos of other mission and historical sites, including Presidio Plaza in San Diego and Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles; numerous cityscape and landscape photos, including California under snow; ending with photos of the couple at the construction site of their house. Photos throughout are well composed and well toned, well above the bar of most photos in vintage photo albums (one interior photo shows the woman who took the photos resting in a chair at a friend's home, with a copy of "Photography" magazine in her lap). The penned dates throughout the album are from 1947 to 1949. In excellent overall condition - interior clean and unsullied, no loose pages, string-bound album with light wear to edges and corners.
