    Performance:    Sonics:
"I am the author of "Joseph Haydn and the Classical Choral Tradition" (Chapel Hill, NC: Hinshaw Music, 1996). This is now my modern-instrument reference recording of Haydn's Creation. It's that good. The contributions of the Mozarteum Orchestra and the Salzburger Bachchor are top notch, and the leadership by Ivor Bolton is superb. Veteran baritone David Wilson-Jones gives a characterful performance here, full of nuance and feeling, really my favorite of the soloists. But Miah Persson also does beautifully. When she pairs up with the solo flute, terrific! And the tenor is good too.

The brass players use "natural" valveless instruments here, so it's not a one-hundred-per-cent modern instrument performance. But the playing of the Mozarteum ensemble is so steeped in echt Viennese classical style that everything they do sounds just right.

This is not a chamber-sized performance, and nor was the piece really meant for that. The choir and orchestra have the horses to make a big sound. That's ably abetted by the recording, culled from live performances in Salzburg. Nice detail, lots of oomph, very natural soundstage.

You will enjoy this performance. A wonderful work, of course, but also a great performance that blends elements of historically informed performance with the best of Central European tradition."
