Introduced in 1938, the Jefferson Nickel is the longest running series for a 5 cent denomination in U.S. Mint history. The original 1938 design, crafted by artist Felix Schlag, displayed a profile view of Thomas Jefferson, one of our founding fathers and the third President of the United States. The Jefferson Nickel was just the third coin in U.S Mint history to feature a former President on the obverse.
During its long history, the Jefferson Nickel has undergone a temporary composition change and in more recent years, a number of obverse and reverse design changes. Since 2006 the design has remained the same.
The current obverse design features a forward facing portrait of the former President along with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the date. The reverse, which is the original design, features an image of Jefferson’s historic home known as Monticello, with inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MONTICELLO,” and “FIVE CENTS.”
These 2018 S 5C Reverse Proof Jefferson Nickels were struck at the San Francisco Mint and issued in the 50th Anniversary U.S. Mint Reverse Proof Set! They have an extremely limited mintage of just 199,177.
