This is a fascinating Antique Old Unusual Surrealist Demon Hell Ship Mythology Oil Painting on Artist Board, depicting a forlorn naked sailor being ejected from a small tugboat by a sharp toothed and fearsome demon. The subject holds only a long-handled broom in his left hand, and timidly steps out into the ocean waves below him. The punishment that this sentence suggests is that the fearful man must mop up the entire ocean, for eternity. This is a similar punishment or "task" that the U.S. Marine Corp. asks of their new recruits. Perhaps the artist was reflecting on his own memories in the U.S.M.C. Honestly, this is all just speculation. The artist's vision can be interpreted numerous ways, and it is impossible to know the answer. This painting certainly draws inspiration from the 19th century Gustave Dore illustration from Orlando Furioso, which shows a demon taunting a man marooned at sea in a sinking boat. This is an old artwork, mounted in a later mid-century frame. This piece likely dates to the 1920's - 1930's.  Approximately 13 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 10 x 14 inches. Good condition for decades of age and storage, with age-related fine craquelure, and small speckles of light soiling throughout. Additionally, there is mild-moderate edge wear and scuffing to the mid-century frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Los Angeles County, California.
