Eine Gesprächsentwicklung war
eigentlich unmöglich.
Ich bin in den fernen Osten gefahren
und habe versucht, mich mit der dortigen
Kultur auseinanderzusetzen. Etwa so,
als ob man einige U-Bahnstationen später
aussteigt als üblich. Im Umfeld aus
dem ich komme baue ich modellhafte Situationen, singuläre Spielräume.
Genau genommen erscheinen
chinesische Künstler moderner als wir im Westen.
Die meisten sind imstande, sich
selber auszutauschen, sie verstehen sich
rein pragmatisch und nehmen ihre
Rolle als Künstler nicht ernst.

The development of a conversation
was actually impossible.
I traveled to the Far East and
attempted to grapple with the culture there. As though I had simply gotten off
the streetcar a few stops later than usual. In the environment that I come
from, I build model-like situations, individual playing fields.
In a certain sense the Chinese
artists seem more modern than Westerners. Most Chinese are capable of viewing
themselves as replaceable. They can see themselves in a purely pragmatic way
and not take their role as artists seriously.
