Nanking Bush Cherry, Prunus tomentosa, Shrub Seeds
Hardy, Showy Edible Fruits, Easy to Grow, Showy Flowers, Fall Color, Fast Growth, Attracts Birds, Wildlife Food/Shelter, Hedge/Windbreak, Cold Tolerant, Adaptable, Bonsai
Nanking Cherry is a fast growing rounded, upright, semi-spreading densely twiggy shrub becoming more open and picturesque with age. Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate with a narrower end basal to elliptic. The bark is an attractive, shiny reddish brown with exfoliating layers. The dark green leaves are very fuzzy on their lower surface. A very hardy and attractive ornamental, great for wildlife plantings and windbreaks.
Nanking Cherry is great for either the border or mass plantings. Both the flowers and fruits are lovely. The pink buds open into white, fragrant, flowers in mid spring. Harvest an abundance of flavorful, tart cherry like fruit in early summer from beautiful dwarf trees. These plants will grow into wide, bushy trees or can be planted 4 to 5 feet apart to make an edible hedge. The 1/2 inch diameter tart fruit can be eaten fresh and are excellent for pies and jellies. The fruit is also relished by birds.
Nanking Cherry has long been widely cultivated throughout eastern Asia for its flowers and fruit. It was introduced to the British Isles in 1870 and the United States by the Arnold Arboretum in 1892.
It is cultivated for a number of purposes. The fruit is edible, being an ingredient of juice, jam, wine and in pickled vegetables and mushrooms. It is also grown as an ornamental plant, prized for its flowers and fruit and pruned for bonsai, twin-trunk or clump shapes, or left upright. It is used for dwarfing rootstock for other cherries. In Manchuria and the mid-west of the United States, the shrub is planted in hedgerows to provide a windbreak. Under cultivation it flourishes in well-drained slightly acidic soil.
Other Names: The Nanking Cherry is also known as Korean cherry, Manchu cherry, Downy cherry, Shanghai cherry, Ando cherry, Mountain cherry, Chinese Bush cherry, Chinese Dwarf cherry, or Hansen's Bush Cherry.
