Care Of Cutlery

IMPORTANT NOTE

Staining and pitting is a rare phenomenon that occurs due to bad handling of cutlery. Knife blades are made from harder stainless steel in order to achieve a lasting edge, however this stainless steel is of a lower corrosion resistance. Prolonged contact with water is probably responsible for more staining and pitting trouble than anything else. If cutlery is left undried, or actually immersed in water for prolonged periods of time, it can cause corrosion.

The following guidelines should be noted to avoid any potential problems :

Wash cutlery immediately after use.
Never leave it to dry overnight and do not use the 'rinse and hold' cycle.
As soon as the dishwasher has finished its cycle, remove cutlery and dry.
Do not leave overnight in a damp environment.
Load the cutlery to the dishwasher correctly and use the correct amount and quality of detergent.

Detergents leave an indelible rainbow stain if not rinsed and dried correctly. Salt is particularly corrosive to stainless steel. Due to the fact that most dishwashers are often fitted with a water softener that needs to be regenerated with salt, ensure the machine is put through the correct programme after this takes place. Do not allow cutlery to be immersed in water or synthetic vinegar for any prolonged period of time. Wet fragments of steel wool can cause rust so ensure they do not come into contact with stainless steel cutlery.
