The Freeman Blackbird is noted for its pure, bright, birdlike timbre, sweet highs and brilliant, liquid responsiveness across registers. It is a pure drop traditional instrument par excellence and has received praise from among the highest echelon of Irish players.

The Blackbird takes more subtle breath control than the Mellow Dog, and therefore is not suited to some beginners. Most intermediate and advanced players (and many beginners, too) are comfortable with its more gentle air requirement. Many have commented that it gives them more leeway in phrasing, as it will allow longer playing between breaths.

The Blackbird is available in Eb, D and C, which can be purchased separately or together as a Blackbird set of all three complete whistles.

Although the Blackbirds are tweaked whistles, they have been extensively reconfigured and are completely different from the mass produced whistles that were transformed to create them.
