Arnold Rothstein was shot dead in a hotel on Fifth Avenue on November 4th, 1928, but in the following 30yrs. nothing was established which threw any light on the identity of his murderer. The obvious reluctance of even the police or the DA's office to move in the matter was a major scandal. After a prolonged outcry in the newspapers, the police did at last charge a certain George McManus with the crime, but the case they presented was so farcically weak that the Judge did not call upon the defence. Yet probably dozens of people knew the truth about the killing. One person certainly did - Rothstein himself: but even he wouldn't talk, in the few hours of consciousness that remained to him. Rothstein was neither a political boss nor a gangster, but was one of the main links between these two spheres. He was a millionaire several times over. He was one of the greatest gamblers in the world, but he also had a lucid, orderly business sense, and "led crime into the business era". A fascinatingly dreadful piece of social history. Far more shocking than the stories of the more notorious gangsters, it reveals the widespread corruption within the New York political and legal administration, the business world, and the labor unions.
