My parchments are nice and attractively priced, but to deserve them, paying the low asking price is NOT ENOUGH; you also have to be PATIENT.

There is NO TRACKING NUMBER, unless you request it and ask me for a specific quotation for shipping your parcel with some courrier company. In all cases shipping is done same day or depending on business holidays, within 1 to 3 days after payment.

In addition, this listing is NOT AVAILABLE FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE A FRENCH ADDRESS because shipping prices are very high within France, while very mild to other countries (shipping is done from a French city) .

For exemple, it is 10 times cheaper to send the PVC tube with the parchments inside, from France to Australia than from my place to the next post office 2 miles away. This is the mystery of rates practiced by the French Postal Administration (government-owned). From what I was told, this strange loophole in rates was established by one former Culture Minister (the controversial Jack LANG) who claimed he thus favorises the spreading of French cultural paper documents far away from metropolitan land.

But there is one disadvantage: sometimes the travelling time amounts to as much as 9 weeks. It does arrive eventually, but it may be frustrating. Sending this way is the only possibility to keep prices very low. On other instances, travelling time has been as low as 1 week. Average is 3-4 weeks.

 DESCRIPTION:

Large paper-parchment from the world famous CANSON-MONTGOLFIER manufacture, created in 1557 in Annonay, France. Please READ carefully details hereafter, because one should not expect to receive an ordinary vellum parchment made of one single large skin. With this parchment you own A UNIQUE PIECE OF WRITING MATERIAL HISTORY.

This parchment is entirely made from a PULP OF MIXED DOMESTIC ANIMAL SKINS (goat, calf, pig). The process of manufacture is SIMILAR TO PAPER except that the PULP used is NOT VEGETAL but ANIMAL. The animal origin is obvious from the unmistakable smell of a burning sample piece. It is NOT made out of one single processed animal skin.

The secret CANSON-MONTGOLFIER process enabled the final resulting product to be a THIN SHEET, which distinctly shows the MONTGOLFIER watermark (see photos).

We think all sheets to be more than 100 years old. Imperfections, variations in colors, age signs etc., exist randomly on each sheet.

We are THE ONLY ONES to supply this type of large real parchment on Ebay or anywhere else. If you know about any other source of these parchments, we would be extremely interested to know where, because in all these YEARS nobody has ever shown us any.

The dimensions are: approximately 60 cm x 50 cm (= approximately 24” x 20”),ready to be used.

The diagonal is about 75 cm (= 30”).

1200 sheets were originally available.

May be used for writing, painting, lamp shading, art, liturgy and religious ceremonies, formal diplomas, genealogy certificates, etc.

This type of parchment, new and never used, IS NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE now. We believe it belongs to a museum display of historical attempts to sophisticated writing supports.

It is a natural product, and therefore subject to irregular surface or aspect, inherent to its nature.

The manufacturing process makes each sheet unique, although very similar to any other one.

Variations in humidity and other factors may have some impact on this product, as is normal for real skin parchment, but overall, it will be much more stable, sturdy and resistant than plain paper, under any circumstances.

All sheets are rolled then shipped. Upon arrival, the curl is easy to remove and no unsightly fold will be left in the material fibers.

GOLDBEATING:

Goldbeating is the process of hammering gold into an extremely thin unbroken sheet for use in gilding.

Specfic material is needed to enable the beat process. Formely ox intestine membrane (Goldbeater's skin) was used. Today the few companies active in producing 23 Karat goldleaf for gilders, can replace this material with our parchment, instead of using less satisfactory Mylar as the basis for their cutch, shoder and mold.

We still have about 1200 sheets

Questions from buyers:

Dear desertic,

Thanks for the incredible parchment.
I paint illuminated style with gold and palladium leaf.
This paper is perfect for the new book I'm making.

I think the thicker paper might be better for heavier washes. Please check out the few paintings posted on my blog and select two nice pieces you feel would compliment my painting style.

I would love to collect more of this paper. Do you have very many pieces left?
Have you tried any art on it?

Watermarks are my favorite.
Thank you

Maybe we could work out something where I can make a purchase for 6-8 sheets. It's hard to get enoug vellum to actually make the signatures for an illuminated manuscript. Thanks again for this valuable opportunity. This project has been a dream of mine for decades.

Sincerely.
Shannon materick Smith

Dear burningstarcore,

I am pleased to learn that this parchment exactly fits your needs. I personally never tried anything on it, I am just listening to what users say they could do. For your information, I still have a few hundreds scrolls but the scaring reality is that I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO REFILL THE STOCK when they are all gone. This material is totally UNKNOWN anywhere else. I bought it from a pre-world war I (pre-1914) BUGATTI car collector who had it from an untracable origin. Also Quality B does have watermarks too, quite visible, despite the slightly less translucent nature of the material.
Pierre.
