JEAN OOSTERLYNCK

(1915-1996)

Belgian Painter

The unmistakable style of Jean Oosterlynck continues to present us with fresh images from his sailing themes. Soaring sea gulls, brilliant blue skies and flashes of sharp white sails draw the viewer into the scene to hear the sounds and feel the sun and the cool breeze off the water. Often combined with appealing still-lifes of fruit and wine, these images invite the observer to relax and enjoy the scene as a welcome guest.

In other works, one sees the terra firma of landscape segments and rooftops gently abstracted to their essential design elements. Here Oosterlynck changes his palette to softer earthier tones, muted and richly subtle. Born in Paris, France on April 26, 1915, Oosterlynck resided on a farm near the village of Courtrai. He attended Academia de Courtrai and the Institute Superieur des Beaux Arts d'Anvers.

He worked predominately in oil, but also did lithographs. After starting as a representational artist, doing portraits, his style, being influenced by Paul Klee.

His works have been exhibited in Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, among others, and are in many European and American collections.

In 1972 Oosterlynck was decorated Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Couronne by King Beaudoin.

He died on June 27, 1996.
