The word “tzitzit” means fringes, and any four-cornered garment worn by males is Torah-required to be strung with tassels. In this days we don't often normally wear four cornered shirts, so instead, the positive mitzvah is accomplished simply by wearing a four-cornered garment all the time, and tying the tassels onto that.
