"The Chicago Historical Society: An Unconventional Chronicle, 1856-1956" is a 256 page, 6"x9.5" hardcover written by Paul M. Angle and published in 1956 by Rand McNally & Company. The author was also the director of the Society, and he inscribed this copy to William Wrigley, quite possibly the then-young heir to the Wrigley Chewing Gum business founded in Chicago by his grandfather - he assumed control of the company five years after publication. Angle wrote the biography of William Wrigley's father, Philip K. Wrigley.

From the promotional card laid in: "Any aversion to historical societies as stuffy and prosaic melts away page by page in Paul Angle's Unconventional Chronicle of the Chicago Historical Society. By skillfully selecting episodes from the Society's first century, he shows that history has the human qualities of warmth, humor, dignity, wisdom, and foolishness, among others, because after all it is people who make history. Readers will learn of the serious problems, the steady progress, and the hilarious incidents in the Society's past, which its members now understandably regard with great pride and sometimes amusement."

There are black-and-white illustrations throughout.

The book is in very good condition, with no dust jacket (as issued). The tan and blue-green cloth boards show very light wear to the spine. There are no interior marks, and the binding is tight. The pictorial slipcase shows rubbing, edge wear, light soiling, separation of the pieces along the seam at the spine top.
