1925 Conn 'New Wonder' Series II ('Chu Berry') alto saxophone (standard finish)

Product Description

This is a ninety-year-old vintage Conn E-flat alto saxophone (serial number 158282; year of manufacture 1925) in full working condition, having been brought to good playing order in our own workshop. It is a New Wonder series II model, nicknamed the 'Chu Berry', one of the more widely known vintage saxes. It has a
lacquered brass finish; these models were offered originally in raw brass, but many including this one were lacquered at a later date, which may be why it looks so good for its age.

Most examples of this model have a 'microtuner' on the crook; this one does not, its long mouthpiece cork suggesting the mechanism has been removed rather than the crook replaced. The vent key on the crook has suffered a break in the past and has a visible repair; it is however still fully functional. Corrosion around the crook receiver also suggests this as the site of past repairs.

The engraving on the bell, enclosed in a scrollwork design, reads: MADE BY/C. G. Conn Ltd/ELKHART IND./U.S.A.;  the lettering below the thumbrest reads:
PATD. DEC. 8, 1914/1119954/A/M158282/L (the 'A' indicates the instrument is an E-flat alto; the 'M' indicates 'saxophone' followed by its serial number; the 'L' indicates it is in low pitch A=440).

The case is a solid modern wooden replacement, not the original case in which the sax would have been supplied. A basic modern plastic mouthpiece, ligature and cap are also included. We stock a range of other suitable branded mouthpieces, should you be interested. Please express your interest prior to finalising payment if you wish us to include one or indeed any other additional accessories.

Features (taken from another website)

"...these horns typify the Big Band sound: you can put a lot of air through them and get a big sound, but not necessarily one that is dead-on for intonation. [They] are generally more technically advanced than others of the same era and were produced in extremely large quantities... This means that you can get an extremely high quality professional horn at a relatively low price..." [from saxpics.com]

Rosehill Instruments is a music retail business which has specialised in selling and repairing brass and woodwind instruments since 1967. It was founded by Trevor Austin (father of Paul) who was previously a euphonium player in the Horse Guards (and played on horseback at the Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953). Following long service in the Salvation Army as a player and conductor, his reputation led to requests to supply instruments around the UK and overseas. Rosehill is now led by Trevor's son Paul. The company was awarded a UK government contract in 1999, and since then has been an approved supplier of musical instruments to Her Majesty's military bands. We also repair, refurbish and service all brass band and military band instruments at our workshops in Beaconsfield. As well as drawing customers from all over the UK, we also supply many instruments to bands and players overseas.
