WHAT IS ANDIROBA OIL?


Andiroba oil comes from the andiroba, also called carapa, a genus of flowering trees belonging to the mahogany family, Meliaceae. They are indigenous to Africa, Central America and South America. They thrive in tropical environments that is why they are presently also found abundant in Colombia, Peru, Brazil and the Amazons. These trees can grow to as tall as 30 meters, with straight trunks, fragrant flowers, and nuts that contains seeds, which is where the oil is extracted.
For generations, the people of the amazons use the oil extensively in the treatment of various maladies, to fuel oil lamps and as insect repellants. It is also produced as a medicinal soap to treat skin problems.

Properties of Andiroba Oil 

The healing abilities of the oil is due to its properties as an anti-allergenic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antioxidant, antiviral, astringent, emollient and vulnerary.
Among its active substances are arachidic acid, andirobin, acetoxy-gedunins, deacetoxygedunins, hydroxylgedunins, , epoxyazadiradiones and gedunins. It also contains the following essential fatty acids: palmitic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid and stearic acid.

Extraction of Andiroba Oil 

Andiroba oil is extracted from the seeds of the andiroba fruit with the use of the cold press method, thereby ensuring its maximum healing potency. This is a long and thorough process. The nuts are at first boiled and then fermented for 25 days up to one month. After fermentation, the pulp is taken out of the nuts and air-dried for weeks. The oil is then allowed to naturally come out of the seeds.
