Antique French Creil & Montereau Porcelain Plate,

Les Danses. La Polka des Bébés”, Dance, Children, Ladies, Piano

This antique French porcelain plate is stamped, “CM. Creil et Montereau”, one of the marks used in the late 19th century by the famous Creil et Montereau porcelain manufacturer. It also bears an embossed mark indicating the date of manufacture. The porcelain factories in Creil, north of Paris, founded in the 18th century, were mentioned by Flaubert in his celebrated novel, “A Sentimental Education”. In 1840, they joined together with those of Montereau, east of Paris, also founded in the 18th century, forming a single company. Winners of numerous awards, Creil et Montereau specialized in what was known as “faïence dure” or “porcelaine opaque”, a hard paste porcelain achieved by the addition of feldspar and kaolin to the traditional formula created by Wedgwood. Creil et Montereau became famous for the fine detail of their “grisaille” designs and for their blue patterns developed under the direction of Barluet & Cie. This plate is the sixth in a series of plates titled, “Les Danses” (The Dances) and the scene here is entitled, “6. La Polka des Bébés”. In excellent condition, with the exception of a few scratches, this plate would be an excellent addition to your collection! Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
