A Pair of Antique Original Chinese Silk Purses,

Qing dynasty, 19th century.

Many traditional Chinese and Manchu garments included no pockets, so men and women carried fans, eyeglasses, chopsticks, incense, money, tobacco, and other small personal objects in decorative bags attached to their belts, buttons, or collars. Finely made bags became fashionable status symbols, and wealthy people frequently exchanged them as gifts. By the late Qing period, professional workshops created pouches in matched sets, often patterned with auspicious imagery.
