Lights Out debuted in 1934 and was radio's premier horror series. Created by Wyllis Cooper, Lights Out was broadcast late studio-produced sounds designed to simulate limbs being torn away from their sockets, beheadings, and bones being broken into. Cooper departed the show in 1936 and was succeeded by Arch Oboler, one of radio's greatest talents. Oboler escalated the level of psychological horror and quickly became the person associated with the show's success.
