The Medal was instituted on 26 September 1951 and awarded to the Belgian soldiers who volunteered for service in Korea. Two battalions of Belgian volunteer troops, each of 900 men, served in Korea during the Korean War, the second battalion remaining until 1955. In total, no more than 3,500 medals were awarded.
