Foreword
Congratulations on your purchase of a GIpro-DS gear position indicator.
The GIpro from HealTech Electronics Ltd. is the most advanced gear position indicator on the market today.
This product will fit all Kawasaki fuel injected (FI) motorcycles which have on-board Diagnostic System connector. This connector is referred as KDS (Kawasaki Diagnostic System) in the Kawasaki manuals.
Unlike other gear indicators available for your bike, this product connects to the diagnostic connector. It makes the installation very simple. The unit reads data directly from the ECU, offering faster and more reliable readings than competing products.
The display is auto learning, there are no buttons and no “programming wire”.
Known limitations:
- ZX10R, VN2000 only: This product will not work in Factory modeif there is a TRE device installed on the motorcycle, or the Gear Position Switch of the bike is faulty or modified.
We have another product, the GIpro/ATRE for customers who want a gear position indicator with built-in Advanced TRE function to improve performance.
- Other models: Your bike is not equipped with Gear Position Sensor, therefore determining the gear in use is only possible when the engine is running and the clutch is released.
Installation
Find the BLACK, 4-pole male diagnostic connector (KDS), usually near the ECU box. Normally it has a “dummy” female plug (without wires) attached to it.
Vulcan 900 / VN900: under right side frame cover
Other models: under seat (rider or pillion)
Note: You may find TWO of this connector on your bike. In this case, try both connectors, but only one of them will supply data to the GIpro. It will not harm your bike if you connect the GIpro to the wrong plug first.
Remove the dummy female plug, and connect the GIpro plug.
Route the cable to the mounting location.
Peel off the green plastic from the back of the unit, and mount the display.
Secure the cable with the cable ties supplied.
Setup
This unit comes pre-programmed for Kawasaki bikes. It is fully functional after installation. When ignition is turned on, the display counts forward (1 to 6) and it will show the gear selected when engine is running and clutch is released.
However, if you have a SpeedoHealer, or other speedometer calibrator installed, you may find that some gears are not indicated correctly.
For this reason, the GPDS-K01 model has two operating modes:
- Factory mode (default, no need to teach the GIpro)
- Custom mode (learning procedure must be performed)
Use the Custom mode only if some gears are not indicated correctly.
Custom mode:
- Perform the Reset procedure as described in the next chapter.
- Turn ignition On. The display counts backwards (6 to 1) indicating that the unit is in Custom mode and it is ready to learn the gear positions.
- Raise the rear wheel off the ground by using a stand, and start the engine in Neutral.
- The display will blink “1”.
Select first gear, release the clutch, and keep the RPM above idle speed.
The display is blinking faster while the unit is learning the gear.
- When the display shows “2”, select second gear.
Repeat this process until all gears are thought (5 or 6).
If your bike has 5 gears, wait until “6” is blinking, then pull the clutch in and turn ignition off.
If your bike has 6 gears, wait until “o” (over) is indicated.
The unit is programmed and should indicate the gears correctly.
Now, when ignition is turned on, the display counts forward (1 to 6) indicating that it is fully functional.
Reset
Perform the Reset procedure if you wish to toggle between Factory mode and Custom mode.
Cut off the power of the unit 6 times in a row, while the GIpro display is counting up and shows 3, 4 or 5 (or counting down and shows 2, 3 or 4).
On certain bikes, you can power on/off the display by flipping the engine RUN switch on/off.
Otherwise, you can do this by cycling the ignition key, or disconnecting-reconnecting the GIpro coupler while ignition is on.
Note: if you wish to stay in Custom mode but want to repeat the learning procedure, you need to execute the Reset procedure twice.
