Rollers can be installed several ways. Some use a press that was specifically designed for this purpose. This is an Arbor Press (When I recondition transformers, I install them that way). Some people say that "it is a waste of money". Lionel installed them this way in the factory. Others have a tool that they use that actually does not require for them to remove the whole arm out of the transformer. Some simply use a sharpened nail seat and remove the arm before doing this. Still others just simply 'pinch' the end. No matter which method you use, the idea is simply to make sure that the roller is moving freely and that it is perfectly on the coil AFTER you have installed the new roller and pin. Failure to do this will result in premature wear on the rollers. It is also a great idea to clean your transformer on the inside. Again, just to keep those contacts clean and operating in "Like New" condition. Also, when you do clean the transformer, you are actually also inspecting it. This way, you might see other parts that are worn and should be replaced.
