Frequent Questions.

What is Solvent Basecoat?

The Colour Matters Solvent Basecoat is an acrylic paint system that enables effects (metallic, pearl & xirallic) to mix uniformly with base colours.  The system allows for the creation of tens of thousands of colours including car colours.

Solvent basecoat systems are designed to allow "clearcoats" to be applied over them to give protection. The protection is for scratch /chip resistance and UV resistance.  2K Clearcoats (chemically cured, iso-cyanate) offer better resistance than 1K Clearcoats (iso-cyanate free).

What is a colour code?

Car manufacturers put a code on the car to indicate the colour used during manufacture.  For Mazda the code is normally on the vehicle data shown on the inside of the door jamb / pillar.

Why does the same colour description have a number of colour codes?

It is not unusual for a single paint colour to have a number of codes.  Some manufacturers use a different paint code for different manufacturing sites.  Or some manufacturers will give a different paint code when the paint is used on a different vehicle model.

What are colour variants?

For some colours slight colour variations have been identified.  The variations are usually due to differences between manufacturing sites (different paint plants).

Examples of categories of variations are "lighter", "darker", "bluer", "yellower".

With modern basecoat systems, the use of fade out / blending clear techniques helps to reduce the impact of variants.
