Antique French Sterling Silver 950 Medal Bas-Relief,

50th Wedding Anniversary, Signed Bottée and Erdmann, 1914

This handsome antique French silver medal features designs in bas-relief on both sides. It is marked “1 Argent” alongside the image of a cornucopia, the hallmark used since 1907 by the Paris mint, “La Monnaie de Paris”, for all medals it strikes in sterling silver (950-1000). The front depicts a scene of a wedding in Biblical times. It is marked “Bénédiction nuptiale” (Nuptial Blessing) and signed “Louis Bottée”. Louis-Alexandre Bottée (1852-1941), French medal designer, studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1878, he was winner of the famous Prix de Rome. He exhibited and was awarded prizes at the Salon des Artistes Français. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris has several examples of his work. The back is beautifully designed with angels and fairies tossing flowers and, with the help of a dove, unveiling a curtain revealing a cartouche flanked by flowers. The cartouche has a beaded border and is engraved with the names “Alcide Serin” and “Louise Birac” and the dates “24 mai 1864-24 mai 1914” indicating that this medal was offered for a golden wedding anniversary. This engraved side is signed “A. Erdmann”. Louis-Auguste-Albert Erdmann (18..-1914), was a French sculptor who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris has several examples of his work in its collection. This medal is offered in its original case. With a lovely aged patina, this piece is in very good condition with the exception of faint scratches. This exquisitely executed piece will be an excellent addition to you collection or an elegant “French” touch to your décor.
