In the early 1970s, the design bureau of the Izhevsk Automobile Plant developed two prototypes of the original design with front and all-wheel drive (Izh-13 and Izh-14). These machines industry management in Moscow recognized as too innovative and untimely, so in Izhevsk decided to try to make a modern body for a proven chassis "Moskvich-412".
The prototype IZH-19, created in 1975, received a spectacular five-door body in a sporty style. True, something could not be realized: for example, block headlights had to be abandoned due to technological complexity of manufacturing. The main designer of this project was Alexander Zorin.
From a technical point of view, Izh-19 was practically the same as the Moskvich: the classic layout, the 1.5-liter UZAM-412 engine with a capacity of 75 liters. with., four-speed gearbox. Because of the need to place the engine under the sloping hood, it had to make a small "hump".
Despite the simpler design from the point of view of introducing into production, the Izh-19 did not give a green light, as it did not fit into the approved plans for the development of the car industry.
One copy of the experimental model was made, at present the car is in the museum "Izh-Auto".
