Tor is an American comics series, created by Joe Kubert and Norman Maurer in the story 1,000,000 Years Ago! (Sept. 1953), published by St. John Publications. The series' protagonist, Tor, is a prehistoric cave man who has fantasy adventures set in a realistically drawn setting. The original series only ran for five issues and ended in 1954. However, "Tor" was revived by DC Comics in June 1975 for six issues. In June 1993 Marvel Comics released new adventures of Tor. And later Tor publications soon followed.

Tor is a prehistoric caveman warrior who lived in the savage world of a million years ago. In a savage world where humans and dinosaurs lived together, Tor was a fierce fighter who used his strength and his wit to fight and survive against the prehistoric monsters of his era. He is a loner whose only true friend is his pet monkey Chee-Chee. Together, along with a stone axe, they stalk the primal lands wrought with danger, peril, ...and adventure!

Joe Kubert is famous for his work on Tarzan, but nothing he has done is more powerful than his work on Tor! Similar to Conan the Barbarian, Kull, and Tarzan (among others), Tor is savage adventure at its best!

Epic Comics - Heavy Hitters presents Joe Kubert’s Tor in a over-sized comic format. Tor tracks down the murderer of his father, Tokar. Set as a prehistoric adventure, this title also draws parallels between Tor’s world and our own. We may not consider ourselves savages, but raw characteristics like greed, vengeance, heroism, fear, and violence are still at the core of human nature.

Story/Spoilers:

In issue #1, “Tor”, Let your mind take you back… back… back to an age when man’s existence depended on his ability to cope with hard, unrelenting forces of primordial nature… and the violence of his fellow man. To a new and raw world where the weak perish and only the strong survive. But… is the world in which Tor lives so different from today? Are the thoughts and emotions that pervade Tor’s mind and heart alien to those you and I feel today? Think for a moment… what is your answer? My answer is within the covers of this book.  Joe Kubert

When Tor comes to the rescue of a woman about to be sacrificed by a strange tribe, he is taken prisoner.

Each issue features a card stock, wrap-a-round cover illustrated by Joe Kubert. (see 10th scan for issue #1 - stock photo from the web provided for informational purposes only and is not the actual cover of this item)

Next in issue #2, “The Chosen One”, Suspend all doubts… all questions… believe that the story bound between these covers actually exits. That is the intent upon which it is written. And, perhaps, it does not take any great stretch on the imagination to see this a reality. Is man so different today than he was Aeons ago? Did he not do violence for food… for vengeance… for power… for a woman? Does he not do so today? Look about you. The world trembles less from earthquake and volcanic eruption than from man’s slaughter of his fellow man. Ethnic cleansing seeks to give senseless reason for insane purpose. For Tor, existence depends on constant awareness in a world in which strange and dangerous confrontations abound. Similar perils exist today. They take various forms and shapes. Look carefully… you might recognize them…  Joe Kubert

Tor's captors subject him to a battery of painful tests, promising to admit him into their tribe--if he survives.

Next in issue #3, “The Rebirth”, Dinosaurs? Alive at the same time that man came into existence? Ridiculous! Scientists tells us that humans; as we know and recognize them, did not come upon the scene until millions of years after the Thunder Lizards disappeared from the face of the Earth. Why, then is Tor in a world of dinosaurs? Tor is an allegory. A story in which people, things and events reflect symbolic meanings. The Players may look different. But the motivations and responses have not changed. By bringing life down to its most basic form, it allows us to gain a perspective on that which affects us today. So dear reader… suspend disbelief… at least for the time it takes to explore the world of Tor.  Joe Kubert

After standing trial, Tor is subject to many hardships, culminating in an all out battle with the repulsive Lizard King.

Finally in issue #4, “Vengeance”, In this, the last climatic issue of a four issue series, Tor finally returns to his tribe… to hunt down the murderers of his father and mother. Albeit the differences that distinguish modern man from his stone age counterpart are obvious, marked similarities remain. The relationship of a child and his parents… the emotions of greed… anger… vengeance… and the cruelty of violence are ever present. Despite these baser instincts, we attempt to rise above that level in today’s world, and for Tor, this is not the end of our story… only the beginning.  Joe Kubert

Tor returns to his home tribe to avenge the death of his father and mother.
