Epiphyllum oxypetalum is an appealing, unique and sacred flowering plant. Flower is like beautiful Lotus, Pure white flowers, the size of a dinner plate, open as soon as the sun goes down and stay open all night, then close in the morning. This wondrous sight is also a stunning experience because of the fragrance. It blooms in waves during the summer months, with sometimes as many as 15 flowers open at once. Nature's ability to manifest such a magnificent creation leaves us in awe of this wonderful epiphyllum. As for all members of the Orchid Cactus family (It belongs to Family Cactaceae) a period of dryness and cool nighttime temperatures in the winter ensures summer bloom.

Planting Cutting: Very easy to care for. Simply dig a hole about 1" to 2", insert cutting side in and cover back up with soil. Keep the leaf above the soil and add water. Keep the plant in either partial sun or shade area. If the soil gets dry mist water on cuttings only not the soil to prevent rot. You should see new growth in about 4 weeks, then water slightly, could take longer during winter period.

Rooting during winter: Leave it indoor with sunlight through window is best or inside the greenhouse

 How to grow: Fill an 8’inch clay pot with slightly damp cactus potting soil. Insert the plant into that soil and tamp the soil around its base. Place the pot where the cutting will get bright light, but no direct sun. Spritz it occasionally with a spray bottle of water to keep the soil only slightly moist. Keep Queen of the Night cactus on an east- or west-facing windowsill where it will receive direct sunlight only in early morning or late afternoon.

Water the cactus until water runs out of the pot's drainage holes. Dump the excess out of the pot's saucer immediately, and wait until the surface of the soil is dry to the touch before watering your cactus again.

Fertilize the Queen of the Night cactus once a month from March through October with a balanced water-soluble plant food, which usually requires about 1/2 teaspoon of crystals per 1 gallon of water for houseplants. After the cactus reaches blooming size, use a high-phosphorous water-soluble plant food in November and February, 1 teaspoon of crystals to 1 gallon of water. Refrain from feeding the plant in December and January. Position the cactus in partial shade under a porch roof or tree, if you decide to move it outdoors during the summer. Keep it above the ground, if possible such as in a hanging basket. Repot the Queen of the Night cactus only once every two years or so, to keep it slightly root bound. Wait until after it flowers in summer, and repot it about a month after it blooms. Prune off any damaged growth at that time as well. Move the cactus to a cooler room over the winter months, one that remains dark during the evening hours with temperatures above 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Reduce the frequency of the plant's watering, waiting until its soil is dry a third of the way down. Resume regular watering in March. Very forgiving of neglect.
