Back in 1948, the first wheeled universal tractor was designed, designed to work with trailed and mounted agricultural machines, activating the working units of stationary units. The possibilities of the new tractor were supposed to be expanded by installing an onboard hydraulic system, an economical diesel power unit.
The project was implemented by the Minsk plant, which launched the production of two versions of the same type.
The MTZ-1 tractor with a narrow front axle gauge was designed for processing high-stalked industrial crops.
Its analogue MTZ-2 was initially focused on inter-row processing of beets and potatoes, therefore, the undercarriage was performed according to the standard scheme.
Both cars were made in two versions - with pneumatic wheels and metal lugs, commonly used on the Universal tractors.
The first prototype MTZ-2 left the assembly shop under its own power in mid-July 1949. This machine became the basis for the development of a more powerful and productive tractor MTZ of the fifth model.
