At the end of 1998, the Gorky Automobile Plant mastered the production of Sobol light-duty delivery vehicles (LCV-MC class), which differed from the popular lorry wheelbase shortened to 2760 mm, independent rear spring suspension and single-sided rear axle designed by the Gazelle family of units of the GAZel family. for a smaller capacity (up to 900 kg).
The family includes all-metal van GAZ-2752 and minibuses GAZ-2217 (Barguzin) and GAZ-22171, as well as a flatbed truck (chassis with cab) GAZ-2310. The base model is the GAZ-2752 van with a sliding side door and hinged rear doors (useful volume of 6.86 m³ in the 3-seater version and 3.7 m³ in the 7-seater cargo-passenger Kombi).
Minivan GAZ-22171 with a raised roof (similar in height "GAZelle" GAZ-3221) in 6 - and 10-seater versions. Since 1999, the production of model 2217 "Sable Barguzin" with a "low" roof (height reduced by 100 mm), a lifting tailgate, positioned by the manufacturer as a minivan, began. For service purposes and taxis, a 10-seater modification of the GAZ-22173 is designed with a more dense layout and simplified trim (available on request).
The Sable family also includes all-wheel drive versions of the GAZ-23107/27527/22177/221717 with a rigid front axle and cardan joints (Hooke’s hinges) in the drive of the front driving and steering wheels. The transmission is made with permanent four-wheel drive with a transfer case driven by a multi-row Morse chain.
In early 2003, the Sobol family underwent a restyling, similar to the Gazelle family, with a renewed design of the tail unit and the replacement of rectangular headlights with modern drop-shaped block headlights, as well as the replacement of the instrument panel and other components of the car.
In 2006, the assembly of the Sobol GAZ-2310 truck, previously produced only in small batches, was transferred to one line of the conveyor with the GAZ-on-board GAZ-3302 GAZel, which significantly increased the production of this model, which was in demand in Moscow, due to restrictions on entry into the city center of vehicles with a carrying capacity exceeding 1.0 tonnes.
In February 2010, AZ GAZ began production of the restyled family "Sobol-Business" with a package of upgraded components and assemblies, similar to the family of "GAZel-Business".
From the end of 2010, Sobol-Business also received the Cummins ISF 2.8 turbodiesel, installed in Gazel-Business since July 2010. The production of models with a lining of the sample of 2003 and partially modernized units called “Sable Standard” has been preserved only to a limited extent for special purpose modifications certified for the power departments of the Russian Federation.
