Superb Rare Collector’s Antique (1930s) 18ct Rolled Gold English “Algha” (Model 423) Eyeglasses / Spectacles In Original Leather Case.

Absolutely wonderful pair of rare antique rolled gold eyeglasses in fantastic condition. There is a mark, possibly a hallmark but is very faint and extremely small and is on the inner part of the bridge. I have never tested them for gold myself as I’m told that would mark the test surface but I had, all throughout my life, been assured they were gold although I have recently been advised they are intact very rare “Algha” glasses made by Algha Works, Smeed Road, London around the 1930s and that they are 18k rolled gold (that’s a layer of gold fused to copper or brass). The Algha brand was recently acquired by another Saville Row company and manufacturing was due to recommence using the original equipment. That was before the COVID hit.

These spectacles belonged to my late grandfather and I have inherited them along with many other things. They were meticulously well looked after by him. He was an immaculate man and looked after everything he ever had.

Please browse all 12 sets of photographs for size and condition as they are self explanatory. They weight about 100g including the box.

the handles are almost dark onyx colour and are finished with a spring loaded snake chain type finish. Lovely item. The lenses are glass and free from scratches or marks. Beautiful quality eyeglasses.

There’s also an indented marking on the inner part of one handle which I assume is either the size or the manufacturer abbreviation. Again impossible to photograph due to small lettering / numbers.

I’m not an expert in these types of items but these are lovely collectible eyeglasses from a bygone era. Almost 100 years old. Should you receive them and they should not be to your satisfaction I will gladly accept them back and refund you in full. I hope to find these a good home. If you are looking for one of these then you’d be hard pressed to find many in better condition for the age.

Kindly note:

I have, since listing this item, again been advised by another eBay member these glasses were made by 'Algha' / Savile Row’ under model number 423. World famous Savile Row tailors also manufactured bespoke frames in London. This gentleman also advised they may not be gold and the hallmark inside the bridge might well be 18K gold filler (a more substantial type of gold plating). As explained above I could not confirm this one way or the other as I have always been advised by family members they were in fact gold.
