Two volume edition of the complete works of Cassiodorus as interpreted by Jean Garet. flavors Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator was a Roman statesman and scholar who served in the administration of Theodoric the Great as well as founding a monastery in his retirement. He kept copious notes and copies of his corrspondence, translated and annotated here by Garet.
Garet was Benedictine monk who published this in 1679 to some criticism. This copy has two folio volumes with leather bindings. There is some missing leather on both (see photos: do not hesitate to ask for more pictures) as well as damage to the spines. However both volumes are solid and hold together well with the stitches holding the volumes together showing sturdy twine forming the ridges on the spine. Exposed boards show heavy pressed publisher's boards underneath. Not illustrated but multiple printer’s flourishes and decorated capitals throughout. Note watermark of three letters; this is proceeded on the page before by a fleur-de-lys design.
Good Condition: folio (15” x 9 1/2” approximately): 2 volumes: full leather bindings with missing leather on both, scuffed and laid bare corners: heavily ridged and banded spines with stitching showing where loss of materials occurs: gilt decorations on spine between bands faded but visible: double column text with annotations at side: some foxing: some discoloration of the page due to age: pencil marks inside front of both volumes: darkening of edges at front of both volumes on title pages and spares: red speckled edges to blocks: “Magni Aurelii Cassiodori Senatoris, Viri Patricii, Consularis, et Vivariensis Abbatis Opera Omnia In duos Tomos Distributa, Ad Fidem MSS.
