Item Description
Up for your consideration is an original watercolor and ink painting, which was an illustration for an early version of LEILA (The Siege of Granada) by Sir Edward G.D. BULWER-LYTTON. The book was written in 1838, and this piece is from an early (possibly first) edition. It is initialed by the artist "L.H.B." although I do not know this English artist.
The piece is small, measuring 5" x 4.5" (including the ornate borders). The piece is a combination of gold leaf, sepia ink, and watercolor. It is professionally & archivally framed, and is in excellent condition, free of concerns. The colors remain bright. The frame has wear to 2 corners (as shown). The outer dimensions of the frame are 10.75" x 12.75".
The novel is set in Granada, Spain in the Middle Ages — beginning in the summer of 1491. It was originally published in an expensive form, with many engraved illustrations. The preface to the 1860 edition explains that the novel has been less popular than his other works of fiction due to the prejudice against literary works that are thought to owe their value, in part, to the illustrations. This is one of those illustrations.
