This volume is part of the Ford Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Series. Proschan, then a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, was one of the winners in 1959 during the inaugural year of the dissertation competition. His dissertation developed a mathematical method for determining optimal spare part kits for large, complex military and industrial systems operating in the field.

The book has bumped spine ends and corners, with very slight fraying at the bottom corner of the front cover. There is minor edge wear. There is a white and yellow sticker, roughly 1 1/2 inches by 1/2 inch, at the bottom left of the front cover. The interior pages are slightly toned with no marks.
