Waltner exhibited at the Royal Academy 1880-91; won the Grand Prize at the Expo Universelle 1900.  He contributed to the "Journal de Beaux Artes" and "L'Art".  He was a noted and prolific etcher of  painting reproductions.  "The Parish Clerk" was one of Gainsborough's most admired paintings.
