This incredible work of art was carved out of a single piece of aged golden teak wood by Master Somsak Meewan. Recently, Mr. Meewan completed a series of really cute pooping elephant plaques for a local client here in Chiang Mai. Fortunately, he was kind enough to save a few pieces for me to list on the internet.  Mr. Somsak Meewan is considered one of the best (if not the best) living elephant wood carver in Thailand today. He is a fourth generation woodcarver specializing in elephant carvings and hails from a long line of elephant mahouts (trainers). Thai culture revers elephants above all other creatures. In the past, elephants were used for such task as clearing forest and transportation. Until recently many Thai people still kept elephants, but nowadays most elephants in the region are kept in conservation centers. Often times herds of wooden elephants are placed in front of spirit houses (as seen in the photo above) to bring good luck to the spirits of dead relatives and transport them through the spirit world.
