Antique Austrian Official WEIGHT MEASUREMENT STANDARD ca.1795 Solid Brass
Before the time of standard measurement units, the world trade was a tricky business. Everyone had their own measurements and even different cities in a country had their own measurement systems.In this lot we present a authentic antique measurement standard from Austria, Europe.
The device is an official standard for weight measurement. It was made in 1795 for the city of Neunkirchen, in Lower Austria.
Made of solid Brass with very interesting hinged arm-lock attached to the lid. Inside there are six cup-like vessel that sit into one another.
- Marked with the year of making - 795 and \with numeral digits.
- The largest one is the main container - it is marked with 16.
- The next one is marked with 8. The next one with 4. The smaller next one with 2.
- The next one smaller is marked with 1.
The lid has several markings. A very detailed circular hallmark of the Austrian coat of arms.
The "795" - the year of making - 1795.
Not sure what the crossed "W" mark stands for. Could be "Wien", or for the Austrian measurement unit "Wiener Klafter".
The Y-like mark is the official government hallmark of the Austrian monarchy. It's like a certificate mark, stating that the object is officially approved.
The tool has normal wearing, it is more than 200 year-old.
Has dents and spots on the Brass.
