A LOVELY VINTAGE ORIGINAL PINK DEPRESSION GLASS RELISH PLATE IN THE "OYSTER AND PEARL" PATTERN, HOCKING GLASS COMPANY, LANCASTER, OHIO, 1938-1940

Depression Glass is called such because collectors generally associate mass-produced glassware found in pink, yellow, crystal, or green with the years surrounding the Great Depression.

The housewives of the Depression-era were able to enjoy the wonderful colors offered in this new inexpensive glass dinnerware because they received pieces of their favorite patterns packed in boxes of soap, cereals, or as premiums given at "dish night" at the local theater.  Merchandisers such as Sears & Roebuck & F.W. Woolworth, enticed young brides with the colorful wares that they could afford even when economic times were harsh.

Because of advancements in glassware technology, Depression-era patterns were mass-produced & could be purchased for a fraction of what cut glass or lead crystal cost.  As one manufacturer found a pattern that was pleasing to the buying public, other companies soon followed with their adaptation of a similar design.  Patterns include several design motifs such as florals, geometrics, & even patterns that looked back to Early American patterns like Sandwich glass.

As America emerged from the Great Depression & life became more leisure-oriented again, new glassware patterns were created to reflect the new tastes of this generation.  More elegant shapes & forms were designed, leading to what is sometimes called "Elegant Glass".  Today's collectors often include these more elegant patterns when they talk about Depression-era glassware.

This plate is part of my mother-in-law, Dora's, Collection of Depression Glass which my husband, John, & I have inherited.  John grew up in Export, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania, so they were quite near to many of the major depression glass manufacturing facilities.

The Hocking Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Isaac Jacob (Ike) Collins in Lancaster, Ohio, & named after the Hocking River.

That Company merged with the Anchor Cap & Closure Corporation in 1937.  From 1937-1983 the Company operated the oldest glass manufacturing facility in the United States, established in 1863, in Salem, New Jersey.  Anchor Hocking's wine & spirit bottles are crafted at a factory in Monaca, Pennsylvania.

This pattern, "OYSTER AND PEARL", was manufactured in the colors of crystal, green, pink, royal ruby, & white.

In our own personal downsizing, we have decided to part with his mother's Collection, & since John grew up with this Collection of Depression Glass, you can count on its ORIGINALITY.

While a couple of the photos show some glare from the lighting, this VINTAGE ORIGINAL has been used, but it is still in lovely ORIGINAL condition; no chips or cracks, & all edges are very smooth.  Age appropriate minor rubbing on the bottom of the plate from movement across a counter top over the years.
