Robert Wodrow was a Scottish minister and historian known for his defense of the Covenanters. His “The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland” was published in two volumes recording and denouncing the persecution of the Covenanters after the Restoration of Charles II to the throne of England and Great Britain. This particular set has interesting clues to its provenance with a label in the upper front corner noting “Case” (T) and “Shelf” (7). Below this is written, “John N. Buchanan/the Presbyterian Residence/Saskaton” and at the very bottom “Days Co./Thames, England/March 1962” when England was just coming out of the Big Freeze of ‘62. At the bottom of the title page is “Geog Gillespie” and “James Adie” alongside “John Nyrew Buchanan.” The first two are in older inks while the Reverend Buchanan is in blue ink. The second volume has the same writing with the exception of Buchanan’s name missing. The two volumes are solid and in good condition for their age with a cracked gutter at the front of volume one, edge wear and soiling. Very nice woodcuts chapter decorations both at the beginning of various chapters and the ends as well as some very nice, very showy decorated capitals. Lists of subscribers, and other important participants in the production
