History: The most traditional garden lantern is the Yukimi or Snow Viewing Lantern known for its wide roof and legged base. classic, six-sided, snow-viewing top, curved 4 leg base, and an Imperial Guardian Lion stands on the roof. Imperial Guardian Lions, also called Fu Dogs, or Foo Dogs, are powerful mythic protectors that have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial Palaces, Temples, Government offices, and the Homes of Government officials, and the wealthy from the Han Dynasty.

In Greater Tibet, the Guardian Lion is known as a Snow Lion. Imperial guardian lions, are still common decorative, and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, and other structures. The beast is sometimes associated with Feng Shui and Buddhism. Fu (Foo) means 'happiness' in Chinese. The Fu /Foo Dogs are said to protect humans from evil spirits, and those that would do harm.
