Description
This rare 1936 version illustrated book, has the then new Queen Mary on the dust jacket with an introduction by its first commodore. The 61 page edition which measures 10 1/4 by 13 inchest includes 19 color plates and many black and white prints, most by famous artist Gordon Grant, depicting not only the history of the sailing vessel, but also other facts of nautical life. From an Egyptian sailing ship circa 1600 B.C. to 1930s era craft. "The Story of New The Ship" gives a fascinating pictorial view, complemented by informative text, of the evolution of ships.
Gordon Grant (1875-1962) was renowned for his maritime drawings and paintings and are captured in this story of the Queen Mary. A prior version also published by McLoughlin Brothers was originally titled "The Story of the Ship" authored by and credited to Gordon Grant. In 1936 McLoughlin published this, a very similar book titled "The NEW Story of the Ship". For some reason, Grant was no longer credited or mentioned as author or illustrator, however his prints are, obviously, still in this version as 32 prints include his signature or initial and others were cropped off. This appears to be a rare version, possibly the 1st and only edition, as I can find no references on it.
Condition: The dust jacket is fair with tears and fold lines as shown. The cloth boards with silver print have been well protected by the DJ, but have break through bumping on the corners and spine. The binding is tight and pages bright. Inside cover has light staining front and back. There are no marks or inscription.
