Rare, 19th-century, French Napoleon Bonaparte bust medal with eagle on the verso. Bust by the famous French artist, sculptor, medalist, and Freemason Pierre-Jean David d'Angers (1788 - 1856). Medal includes marking "DAVID D'ANGERS" on the edge of the shoulder. (See photos.)
Verso shows a crowned eagle with laurel and lightning in the eagle's talons. Mint mark on lower edge of verso at 6:00 is a serif "C" vertically intersected by a line with a small triangle to the right of the "C." (See photos.)
These Napoleonic medals were manufactured by the French Mint with and without a wide range of mint markings in the second half of the 19th century in a range of metals. I cannot locate this particular mark in any tables of historical medal mint markings.

My great-great uncle brought this medal and other coins back from France after serving as a military photographer in WWI. This medal was amongst other mid- and late-19th-century French coins he acquired while serving in Europe, and has been in the family for four generations.

Condition: Good. Excellent detail, with minimal wear on front bust, verso shows more wear. Surface shows nice patina, with wear commensurate with age. Appears to be white metal alloy. Please carefully inspect all photos before purchase, and inquire with seller for more information. US Lincoln penny is included in photos for scale only.
