The Space Shuttle was used for manned space flights. The system had been developed by the US space agency NASA since the 1970s, the first mission STS-1 was launched on 12 April 1981. By reusing parts of the system, flights into space were to become significantly cheaper than with non-reusable launch vehicles. This expectation was not fulfilled due to high repair costs. The last flight took place in 2011.
