Coast Chart No. 8 Wells to Cape Ann, 1867 US Coast Survey

An attractive chart of the waters from Wells,ME to Cape Ann, MA includes detailed soundings; navigational hazards; andnavigational aids such as lighthouses, light ships and bouys. Twofinely-engraved coastal profiles of the approach Cape Ann give added appeal. This is an original black and white 38.5 in Hx 30 in. W Inches. The scale is 1 inch = 80,000 ft. It was produced by the U.S. Coast Survey and issued in the 1867 Annual Report. Shows triangulation. Thischart was prepared under the direction of A.D. Bache.

Also provided is detailed topographical andcartographical information on the adjacent coastal regions, including Mainelocations of Ogunquit, York and Cape Neddick; New Hampshire locations ofPortsmouth, Rye and Hampton and Massachusetts locations of Newburyport and CapeAnn. In these areas one can make out minutely-engraved street plans, roads,elevations and even the boundaries of individual land holdings.

 The United States Coast Survey is the oldestscientific organization in the Federal Government, first established in 1807 byThomas Jefferson for the benefit of American commerce.

 The chart has been protectedin the 1867 US Coast Survey book for the past ~150 years.  Condition is fair as noted in the photographsand the grading scheme noted below. Toning along the fold lines. Two 2-inch separations at the pointthe map is connected to the book (within the map frame but in a blank part ofthe chart). Small separations at the fold corners on the center fold line in 2places. A Small v- tear on the center fold line. Minor spotting or foxing.

The chart will be shippedinsured as folded and well protected.

 

A Note on the Grading of Maps (using convention outlined in Rosenthal'sAntique Map Price Record & Handbook):

·      Fine: Cleanand bright, with crisp engraved lines. On sound paper with wide margins. Finequality coloring.

·      Very Good: Cleanand bright, with crisp engraved lines. On sound paper with no imperfections inthe image. Small tears or minor discoloration in the margins only. Very goodquality coloring.

·      Good: Nosignificant imperfections. Minor spotting, foxing, short separations oncenterfold with no image loss, or overall age toning may be present. May havenarrow margins but paper is still sound. Good coloring.

·      Fair:Noticeable imperfections. Scattered foxing or spotting. Long separations oncenterfold or tears entering image which can be easily repaired. Color may beslightly faded.

·      Poor: Needssignificant repair and cleaning. Paper may be highly acid and brittle. Colormay be faded.
