Ducati had been making bevel driven camshaft bikes for a very long time, they found success with the 750 and later 900 series bikes using the shaft.bevel gear system in both regular and desmo drive configurations. But they were expensive to make.
in 1979 Ducati released the first of the belt drive replacements, the Ducati Pantah 500 (SL500).

Very few, (163) were made in 1979, and in 1980 the color scheme was changed to an iceberg blue color.
Other visible changes to the 1980 were: Painting the front forks, instead of polishing, painting the entire front and rear wheels instead of the highlighted polishing, adding a removeable solo seat section to the 1980 bikes.

As far as I know only one Red and Silver 1979 was imported into the USA by Berliner Motors, and sold to the West Coast Dist Ed Brooks
Ed had a large collection of motorcycles, and paid $3500 for this one. Other than the test drive Ed never rode the bike, it shows the original 15 KM, (9 miles) on the odometer.

The basic engine design, and the frame design became the backbone for Ducati's for the next 30 plus years, and is still used in some Ducati models today
