In good condition, very nicely bound set. Beautifully marbled end papers, prince written in ink on fly page. Original owner’s name on title page. Moderately foxed throughout, as to be expected. Minor scuffing to boards and spines. Gilt work still bright and vibrant. A wonderful set. Please see photos.

Our set was previously owned by Jeal Paul Cockey (1796-1859), an important Baltimore physician. Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a French writer and botanist. He became friendly with Jean-Jacques Rousseau where, together, they studied plants in and around Paris. In 1795 he was elected to the Institut de France, in 1797 manager of the Botanical Gardens, and in 1803 member of the Academie Francaise. He was an avid advocate and practitioner of vegetarianism, and although a devout Christian was heavily influenced by Enlightenment-era intellectuals Voltaire and his mentor Rousseau. COLN1824BMNA
