An Antique Early Victorian Inlaid Writing Slope.
A good quality veneereded and inlaid writing slope dating from the early Victorian period.
This handsome Victorian writing slope sits on a simple bevelled and ebonised base. The exterior and interior are veneered in a variety of woods including burr. Of traditional wedge shape the two lids are heavily decorated with a variety of inlays including veneers, mother of pearl and white metals. The bezelled edges of the lids are additionally and attractively inlaid. The upper lid is secured by a working key and lock. On opening the three section upper interior is exposed. The rectangular middle section being covered with a veneered lid with white button lift. On opening the lower lid the writing surface is exposed. This is finished in its original tan coloured velvet. In turn this can be raised to reveal the plain interior lower section of the slope. The various lids and flaps are secured by their original clean, bright and functional hinges. The base of the slope is covered in light brown baize type material. This is not original and has been applied at some stage of the slopes life.
Dimensions: The slope measures 36cm x 29cm x 12cm.

Condition: In good used antique condition. The slope is in a good clean and waxed condition with minor age related marks to the exterior and interior surfaces. The veneer is intact with some age related marks as shown in the images. The inlays are intact. One triangular section of metal on the back of the bevelled edge of the locking lid appears to be a replacement made at some stage of the slopes life as it is brighter and more yellow in appearance. All brass hinges work as intended and are clean and bright. The key and lock work as intended. The lids are firm on their hinges and function as intended. The tan velvet lining forming the writing surface is intact but it is timeworn. There is slight wood loss to the ebonised base plinth from chipping. We encourage potential buyers to make use of the 24 images to satisfy themselves of condition and encourage any enquiries.
